May 17, 2015 (Lemon Grove) -- San Diego Legends is an annual recognition of San Diego elders who lead by example. The Legends exhibit is comprised of paintings by local artist Mona Mills (famous for her realist style blending painting and photography to produce riveting, almost 3-D portraits), photography by San Diego County Library Director José Aponte, and an impact statement about each legend by Deputy Director Susan Moore.
This year’s legends are: former county director of Social Services Cecil Steppe, Renaissance man John Howard, UCSD ethnology professor Robert Alvarez, author Jacqueline Gmach (From Bomboloni to Bagel), and Filipino Press writer/activist Aurora Cudal.
“Their lives are a testament to the value of hard work, spiritual integrity, and commitment to others,” says Helen Ofield, president of the Lemon Grove Historical Society.
The exhibit debut and reception will be held Friday, May 29 at 6 p.m. at the Lemon Grove branch of the County Library. The reception will include meet and greet with the legends, music by Richard Favale, a dance performance by the County’s Filipino-American Employees’ Association, and refreshments.
The exhibit is sponsored by the award-winning San Diego County Library and Aging & Independent Services. It will remain on exhibit until July.
