April 23, 2019 (Lemon Grove) -- The Lemon Grove Library will present Art Days, a two-part, inter-generational event on May 14-15 in the Lemon Grove Library at 3001 School Lane.

The youngest artists lead off on May 14, 4:30 - 5:30 p.m., with "Preschool Art Show" curated by their Lemon Grove teachers and library staff.

Artists, military wives and lifelong soul-mates Ellen Glasgow (Kentucky) and Sandra MacDiarmid (California) will be in town for "Mail Art: correspondence from the heart" on May 15, 5:30 - 7 p.m. A reception followed by Q & A moderated by Helen Ofield, Lemon Grove Historical Society, will center on samples of the women's correspondence accompanied by their gorgeous water colors and intricate drawings.

“In this case of art-meets-life-meets-art-meets-the-USPS, Glasgow and MacDiarmid have chronicled their friendship and life challenges over the decades and discovered each other's capacity for ceaseless creative expression. The result is a personal and artistic partnership that began when stamps were four cents each and has transcended the Internet with its truncated linguistics, casual transitions, keyboarding and speed,” Ofield says.” Not so the work of these two distinct individuals. Both hand-write and illustrate every letter. Glasgow runs the Capital Gallery of Contemporary Art in Frankfort, KY when not sending or receiving ‘mail art’ from MacDiarmid, a noted printmaker and water colorist. Both have raised children, both were in the vanguard of what has become a world-wide movement--what one writer termed `putting the post in post modern.’ Each is surprised by the content from her close friend. Each can hardly wait for the next envelope.”

The exhibit opens May 14 and will run through the end of May.  For more information, call 619-463-9810.
