December 26, 2015 (Lemon Grove) -- The History Alive" lecture series continues on Jan. 7th at 7 p.m. in the H. Lee House Cultural Center (3205 Olive, Lemon Grove), when the Lemon Grove Historical Society presents chef Louise Mathews, former Food Chief in the San Diego County prison system speaking on her true-life adventures on both sides of the bars.

“For an insider's POV  (point of view) on how to prepare 40,000 meals a week for prison staff and inmates for, like, 21 years, seek no further than the genius-level and hilarious raconteur Louise Mathews. Before her unbelievably complex tour of duty in this county, she spent more than two decades cooking in restaurants, hotels, schools and you-name-it elsewhere in the U. S.,” says Helen Ofield, Lemon Grove Historical Society president.

She adds, “Along the way she devised recipes for virtually anything edible. This woman knows from pots and pans. When you read her terrific book, Jailhouse Cuisine: From the Right Side of the Bars, you will, too. More good news: Louise is bringing her patented Jailhouse Cookies, a treat that has left creeps, crooks and con men of all stripes (pun intended) begging for more.”

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the event, which starts at 7 p.m. For more information call 619-460-4353.

"History Alive" is suitable for ages 18 and over. Videography of lectures is underwritten by a Community Enhancement Grant from the San Diego County Board of Supervisors on the recommendation of Supervisor Dianne Jacob, District 2. Ancillary costs of the series are underwritten in part by the Mary England Endowment for Education. The H. Lee House is handicapped accessible, flanked by free parking and close to trolley and bus lines.
