Come celebrate the historic accomplishment of 25 community members that answered a social media post to reopen an 85-year-old service club.
On June 20, 2022, now President Jessyka Heredia and Vice President Teresa Rosiak put out a Facebook post asking if people in Lemon Grove and surrounding areas would like to join the 2 women in reopening the club. 50 people replied and 25 people showed up to the very first meeting in the back patio of Giardino, a local Italian restaurant. All 25 attendees ended up signing up and 1 year later the club has 28 members, one of the largest service clubs in Lemon Grove today.
The Lemon Grove Forward Club was originally opened in 1913 when women had little to no voice in politics and their community. A group of women decided the best way to be able to get involved and bring attention to the things they cared about was to open a service club and the Forward Club was born.
The original Forward Club is much like today’sForward Club where group members gather to help in the community where they see a need. Examples of their philanthropic work today include sponsoring the annual Lemon Grove Toy Drive organized by The Kids Fashion Network, A sock drive for the homeless, sponsoring an exhibit of the original Forward Club that the Lemon Grove Historical Society has currently still on display, raised money for Canine Companions an organization that trains andassignscompanion dogs for disabled, police and schools among other organizations, a back to school drive and many more events are planned moving forward.
The Forward Club’smission statement is “the coordination and promotion of activities for the cultural, charitable, and intellectual advancements of our members, and of our local and global communities.”
The Lemon Grove Forward ClubIs celebrating this fantastic achievement with a lemonade stand hosted by both VFW’s here in Lemon Grove. Post 2082 is located at 2885 Lemon Grove Avenue and Post 1512 is located at 6867 Federal Blvd.
Come say hello to the club members and celebrate with them by purchasing a cold glass of Lemonade on Saturday June 24th from 11am till 2pm at both locations. The recommended donation is only $2. The Forward Club is a 501 (c) (3) and all funds raised go to continue their efforts with community causes as well as global issues.
